Put the user first: Everything we do at Cliqz follows this simple principle. It sets us apart from the large companies that currently dominate the Internet. They shape the web according to their interests and the interests of the advertising industry.
We, on the other hand, have a very different vision of the Internet. We believe in an internet where values, such as transparency, privacy, openness, security and respect matter. An internet where personal data remains in the possession of users and these users reach their destination via the shortest route – even if this means fewer opportunities for advertising.
We Redesign The Internet
We view the internet from the user’s perspective and then re-invent it.
Admittedly, this is a very ambitious goal for a small startup like Cliqz. With CLIQZ for Firefox, however, we’ve already shown that fundamentally new approaches like “searching inside the browser” and “personalisation without personal data” are possible. With just two years of development work, we’ve removed the barrier separating browsers and search engines which has been in place for two decades. By doing this we have created an entirely new and universal user interface for the Internet. What is more, our new technology for greater security on the web is about to be introduced.
We’re breaking new grounds when it comes to developing our business model. Even if it’s too early to talk about it, we can already promise that “Put the user first” and the privacy of our users will always remain as pillars that we build the future of this business on!

The mission of the German startup Cliqz is to redesign the Internet for the user by combining the power of data, browser, and search. In Munich, 114 experts from 31 countries develop browsers and browser extensions with integrated search engines to bring users to their destination in the most direct way while protecting their privacy.
Jean-Paul Schmetz founded Cliqz GmbH in 2008. Since May 2013, Cliqz GmbH has been majority-owned by Hubert Burda Media, one of Europe’s leading media corporations. In August 2016, Mozilla joined as a strategic minority investor. With Cliqz for Firefox launched in June 2014, the concept of searching quickly via the browser gained traction fast with 900,000 daily active users in just a few months. The Cliqz browser for Mac and Windows with integrated anti-tracking launched in March 2016, quickly followed by apps for iOS and Android.
