Have you ever wanted to download a video from YouTube to watch it offline anywhere and at any time? With Cliqz, this is now very easy. We have integrated a video downloader into our desktop browser. If desired, you can even just download the audio track of a video and save it as an audio file. Videos can also be watched offline with Cliqz for Android and iOS.

Video Downloader Button

In the desktop browser you start the download via a video icon, which appears next to the URL bar and Control Center (Q symbol) when you open a YouTube page. To download clips embedded in web pages, you must first open the corresponding video page. To do this, click the YouTube icon in the video.

A click on the video downloader icon opens a drop-down menu where you can choose the desired format and video resolution for the download. Videos are usually available in container format MP4 with 360p or 720p. The selection can vary from clip to clip, however, depending on the resolution provided by YouTube or the copyright owner of the video.

The download itself starts by clicking on the desired format in the drop-down menu. The downloaded file can be found in the folder specified for downloads in the browser settings. It also appears in the Download Manager. The higher the chosen video resolution, the larger the download will be. For example, a 20-minute video comes at just under 50 megabytes in 360p and 140 megabytes in 720p.

Create audio files from YouTube videos

Downloading only the audio track of a video is useful for music clips or concert recordings. Normally the audio-only format is M4A with a bit rate of 128 Kbps. At a running time of around 4 minutes, the downloadable M4A file is approximately 4 megabytes in size.

With Cliqz for Mobile, you can also watch YouTube videos offline. On Android you have to open the video page in the browser and then select “Watch video offline” in the triple-dot menu at the top right. A selection of available video formats will appear. On iOS you will find the option in the action menu (square with arrow pointing up). [Update 10/15/2019: The video downloader is no longer available in the mobile versions of Cliqz.]

You can download the newest version of Cliqz for Windows, macOS and Linux directly from our website. The mobile versions for Android and iOS are available in Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
