In another blog post we introduced the main features of the anonymous Cliqz Search Engine (beta), which is not dependent on the US search giants Google and Bing thanks to its independent index. In this article, we’ll look at the settings that allow you to customize the Cliqz search experience to your needs.

To open the Cliqz Search Engine settings, you must first go to the Cliqz homepage at cliqz.com (previously beta.cliqz.com) and then click on the burger menu button in the upper right corner. This will open a menu that allows you to download the Cliqz Browser and to navigate the Cliqz website. Another click on Settings at the top of the menu takes you to the search engine settings:

Search Results for Different Countries

Currently you can get search results for three countries: United States, Germany and France. To change your selection, open the search engine settings and select the desired country under “Search settings.” Here you can also change the language of the search interface (English, German, French) and the unit system (automatic, metric, US based).

Safe Search for Filtering Adult Content

You can turn the “Safe Search” option on and off under “Search settings.” By default, Safe Search is active. It will automatically filter most offensive or adult content from the results. Alternatively, you can toggle between safe and explicit results right below the search bar on the results page.

Manage Widgets on the Cliqz Homepage

You can add info boxes for weather, currency, time and soccer to your Cliqz homepage. Just search for the desired info once and click the blue “Follow” button below the first result. This way, you can always see the latest weather forecast for your chosen city on your Cliqz homepage, for example. This also works for exchange rates, local times and soccer results.

To remove an info box from your homepage, go to the search engine settings and flip the corresponding switch under “Widgets.” Alternatively, you can remove a widget entry by clicking on the small cross next to it.

Latest News in Several Languages

By default, your Cliqz homepage displays the latest news of the day from trustworthy sources (scroll down to see more news). If you like, you can switch between different news editions. This is useful if you want to read news from German media in English, for example. To do so, go to the search engine settings and select your preferred news editions under “News.”

News feed settings

Here you can also disable the news feed by flipping the switch if you don’t want to see any news on your Cliqz homepage.

Furthermore, you’ll find all the news sources you follow, which appear between the curated top news in the news feed on your Cliqz homepage. To remove a news source from your feed, just click on the small cross next to the entry.

Change Background Image

The Cliqz Search Engine homepage always comes with a beautiful background image. You can choose between three new backgrounds every day. Use the arrow in the lower left corner of the screen to switch to the next background:

If you prefer a white background for your Cliqz homepage, you can also turn off the dynamic backgrounds. Simply open the search engine settings and flip the corresponding switch under “Appearance.”

By the way, you can actively help us to improve our search results by using the Cliqz Browser with our built-in Human Web technology. If you can’t find the desired result via the Cliqz Search Engine, temporarily switch to another search engine like Google in the Cliqz Browser and select the appropriate result. This will add the result to our search index and it will soon be available in the Cliqz Search Engine. Of course, you’ll remain completely anonymous to us. Learn more about how this works in our Techblog.
